Lead Safe Home Program

Grants to make homes built before 1978 lead-safe when a young child or pregnant woman lives in — or regularly visits — the home.

Information last reviewed July 2026

What it is

Lead is poisonous to a child’s body and can harm the brain, causing learning difficulties and behavioral problems. The Lead Safe program provides grants for low- and moderate-income homeowners and renters to make homes lead-safe according to HUD guidelines.

The process starts with a free Lead Risk Assessment by the Cuyahoga County Board of Health; remediation work is done by state-licensed lead abatement contractors.

Good to know

  • Renters can apply too — landlords take on certain obligations (rental preference for families with young children, rent freeze for a year).
  • Children under 6 should have a blood lead test — it’s quick, and it’s the trigger for many kinds of help.

How Gesher helps

We’ll request the free inspection, assemble the income paperwork, and coordinate between the county, contractors and (for renters) the landlord.
